Nursing Home Bedsores Incidents

For various reasons, bedsores often accompany other types of nursing home neglect.  Bedsores are a particularly hazardous sign of potential nursing home neglect, due to the health ramifications that stem both directly and indirectly from bedsores, especially if they are not treated quickly and promptly.

A recent article about various alleged nursing home neglect in two Connecticut nursing homes highlights bedsore development in three residents, including a severe bedsore in one nursing home patient.  These bedsores are mentioned in the September 25, 2014 Hartford Courant article titled “Nursing Homes Fined Following Lapses In Care, Verbal Abuse Of Residents.”  The article discusses a variety of alleged nursing home neglect issues, including the development of bedsores as well as falls by nursing home residents.

Two excerpts from the article:

On July 8, Greenwich Woods Health Care Center was fined $1,650 in connection with residents who developed pressure sores and the resident with Parkinson’s disease who fell 15 times between Jan. 5 and May 18.

also:

In the case of three residents who developed pressure sores, DPH found that the home had failed to document that it had assessed the wounds weekly or had properly monitored them. One wound got so bad that a tendon was exposed on the back of a resident’s knee, DPH found.

Additional details regarding this alleged nursing home neglect can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the Hartford Courant article mentioned above, as well as the September 25 c-hit.org article titled “Nursing Homes Fined Following Lapses In Care, Verbal Abuse Of Residents.”

Serious Bed Sores Acquired After Admission

The Indiana State Department of Health released its annual Indiana Medical Error Reporting System Final Report for 2013 (pdf) dated September 24, 2014.

This report is notable with regard to the bed sores (also commonly called bedsores, pressure sores, and pressure ulcers) statistics and commentary that it provides.

An excerpts from the Executive Summary:

Indiana’s Medical Error Reporting System requires that hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, abortion clinics, and birthing centers report a serious adverse event that occurs within that facility. For 2013, there were a total of two hundred and ninety three (293) facilities required to report. One hundred eleven (111) events were reported for 2013. One hundred two (102) events occurred at hospitals while nine (9) events occurred at ambulatory surgery centers.

One hundred eleven (111) is the most reported events for a year since the beginning of medical errors reporting in 2006. The average number of reportable events per year has been 100.9 events. The most reported event for 2013 was stage 3 or 4 pressure ulcers (also known as bed sores) acquired after admission, followed by retention of a foreign object in a patient after surgery, surgery on the wrong body part and serious disability or death associated with a fall. These were the same top four reported events in the last six (6) of eight (8) years of medical error reporting.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in the report mentioned above, as well as in the September 24, 2014 wthr.com article titled “Bed sores Indiana’s most common medical error.”

Bedsores Named In Nursing Home Neglect Lawsuit

The development of bedsores (also commonly referred to as bed sores, pressure sores, and pressure ulcers) was named in a lawsuit.  This lawsuit was previously filed against a Florida nursing home.  That same nursing home has subsequently been named in additional lawsuits, which are discussed in the September 12, 2014 wftv.com article titled “Troubled Ormond Beach nursing home now facing negligence lawsuits.”  This article discusses various nursing home neglect lawsuits filed against the Florida nursing home, Avante at Ormond Beach.  These lawsuits and alleged underlying negligence provide another example of the types of lawsuits that are filed over alleged nursing home neglect.

According to the article, four negligence lawsuits have been filed against the nursing home over the last year.

Another article, from the The Daytona Beach News-Journal, dated July 17, 2013 and titled “2 file complaints against Ormond nursing home already on fed’s watchlist” discusses lawsuits and associated neglect allegations concerning the nursing home, and specifically notes the development of bedsores in one nursing home patient.

An excerpt from this article:

One of the patients, Constance A. Hall of Volusia County, was admitted to Avante in 2010 and still lives there. She suffered malnutrition, bedsores, pneumonia, multiple urinary tract infections, sepsis and MRSA, according to her lawsuit. She also fractured her right hip in a fall.

The article also discusses the injuries and other harm suffered by Constance Hall and another nursing home resident:

The lawsuits charges the two patients “suffered bodily injury and resulting pain and suffering, disability, disfigurement, mental anguish, loss of capacity for the enjoyment of life, expense of hospitalization, medical and nursing care and treatment, and aggravation of previously existing condition.”

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the two articles mentioned above.

Bedsores Evident In Riverdale, Illinois Alleged Abuse

A September 8, 2014 CBS Chicago article, titled “5 Hospitalized For Signs Of Neglect At Home Care Facility” discusses alleged neglect at a Riverdale, Illinois home that was being used as a care facility.

The five people hospitalized were suffering from dehydration and bed sores.

As discussed elsewhere in this site, bed sores (also commonly called bedsorespressure ulcers, and pressure sores) often accompany elder abuse, and this abuse can happen in a private home or a health care facility such as a nursing home.  As such, the development of bed sores can possibly indicate that abuse and/or neglect is happening.

Other signs of abuse and/or neglect in a health care setting (such as a nursing home, hospital, assisted living facility, or retirement home) include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Bruising and cuts (especially those unexplained)
  • Broken bones (especially those unexplained)
  • Unsanitary conditions, especially those widespread
  • Open sores
  • Infections
  • Visible blood on bed sheets, clothing, or elsewhere
  • Burns
  • Feces or urine on beds, floors, or elsewhere
  • The smell of feces and/or urine
  • Unreasonable physical restraints
  • Nursing home accidents that appear odd or are recurring
  • Malnutrition and/or dehydration
  • Sudden substantial losses of weight
  • Untreated injuries, or inappropriately treated injuries
  • Signs of sexual abuse, including suspicious injuries on or near sexual organs

Should someone you care for show signs of any of the symptoms listed above, or develops bed sores, you may be able to pursue legal action for abuse/or neglect.  A qualified personal injury lawyer who handles Illinois nursing home abuse and neglect cases should be consulted.

Bedsores And Potential Health Problems

In this site, it is often mentioned that many other health ailments can accompany bedsores.  While the reasons for this are various, often a general state of neglect leads to many of these health problems.

Bedsores, if left untreated, often lead to serious direct and indirect health problems.  As discussed on the Chicago Bedsores Lawyer page, of the potential health problems that can occur due to bedsores, two are infections and sepsis.

Infections and sepsis are mentioned in a National Institutes of Health (NIH) video, seen on its National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) site, titled “The Body’s Response to Traumatic Injury.”  In this video, which is slightly over three minutes in length, Dr. Scott Somers discusses the body’s reaction to traumatic injury, in which he discusses the following:

  • Shock
  • The “systemic nature” of injuries
  • The “injury process”
  • The inflammatory and immune response
  • Traumatic injuries’ impact on organs
  • Infections
  • Sepsis

Further information can be seen in the NIGMS video mentioned above.

If someone you care for has developed bedsores, it is of critical importance that they receive prompt and proper treatment.
