Bed Sores As A Substantial Source Of Harm

Prevention of bed sores is a critical topic, as is the immediate and proper treatment of bed sores should they occur.  Due to the potential severity of adverse health consequences of bed sores, health care professionals both in Illinois as well as nationally should follow proper procedures to prevent bed sores.

As seen in various bed sore statistics, bed sores remain a too-common occurrence, due to a variety of reasons.  Of course, one of the most common reasons for the development – and worsening – of bed sores is negligence on the part of health care providers, such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

On January 29, 2015, Vox published an article titled “Medical errors in America kill more people than AIDS or drug overdoses.   Here’s why.”  Within this article, one of the subjects discussed is bed sores, in which it states “Bed sores are a huge source of harm in the health care system.”  The article contains statistics and discussion of causes and the prevention of bedsores, and also shows a picture of a foot with bed sores.

Dehydration And Malnutrition As Factors In Bedsore Formation

In many posts on this site (including that of June 23, 2014, titled “Preventing Bed Sores“) the prevention of bedsores (also frequently called “pressure sores”) is discussed.

The prevention of bedsores is a critical topic, as the direct and indirect adverse health consequences of bedsores can be severe.

Bedsores are often preventable, and as such, in instances where they do form – and especially in instances where they are ignored or not properly treated – they may signal that neglect is occurring.

While bedsores do form for a variety of reasons, there are various conditions that may make a person more susceptible to bedsore formation.  Two of these conditions include dehydration and malnutrition.

The January 14, 2015 McKnight’s article titled “Intervention:  How eating and drinking can save your skin” discusses the relationship between dehydration, malnutrition, and pressure ulcers.  An additional resource regarding pressure ulcers can be found at the NPUAP page titled “New 2014 Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Ulcers:  Clinical Practice Guidelines.”
