Lawsuit Highlights Common Bedsores Neglect Issues

A recent lawsuit regarding the alleged development and worsening of bedsores in a long-term acute care hospital is discussed in the November 25, 2015 AL.com article titled “Jury Awards $300,000 to family of 86-year-old woman who developed severe bedsores in Montgomery Hospital.”

The article discusses the lawsuit and allegations regarding health care neglect.  It also mentions various aspects of the bedsore development that are common.  For instance, it mentions that the female patient allegedly was not “turned” and “repositioned,” which is a common safety procedure used to prevent bedsore development.

As well, details are provided in the article about the extent of the bedsores, mentioning that the patient developed an “‘open’ area to the coccyx” (the “coccyx” is typically referred to as the tailbone.)   An excerpt from the article:

The victim’s family claims the staff at Nolan Hospital failed to address the change in Hopkins’ condition, and by Jan. 12, 2012 Hopkins had an open Stage 4 pressure sore on her coccyx and a pressure sore on her left heel.

The pressure sore on her coccyx continued to deteriorate while she was at Noland, according to the lawsuit.

According to the article, the $300,000 jury award followed a five-day jury trial.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in the AL.com article mentioned above, as well as the November 25 geos news article.
