The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) has classified the severity of pressure sores based upon the degree of soft tissue damage. As seen on the NPUAP page that describes the various pressure ulcer stages, the least severe pressure sores are considered to be Stage 1 whereas the most severe is Stage 4.
As discussed often on this site, the existence of pressure sores (also commonly referred to as bedsores, bed sores, and pressure ulcers) are problematical for many reasons. They are cause for immense concern. As seen in various discussions, statistics, and wrongful death lawsuits, pressure sores that are not immediately and properly treated often cause a deterioration of health that, if allowed to persist, can lead to a variety of severe health conditions, some of which can be fatal in nature.
A recent article, that of March 27, 2016 titled “Wagner Heights Nursing Center Sued” discusses a lawsuit filed regarding the level of care received in a California care facility. In the article, an “infected Stage IV pressure ulcer” is mentioned, as is the allegations concerning the level of care that the resident, identified as Robert Lampkins, received.
Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including that mentioned above.
