Pressure Sores, Their Stages, And Their Significance

The National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) has classified the severity of pressure sores based upon the degree of soft tissue damage.  As seen on the NPUAP page that describes the various pressure ulcer stages, the least severe pressure sores are considered to be Stage 1 whereas the most severe is Stage 4.

As discussed often on this site, the existence of pressure sores (also commonly referred to as bedsores, bed sores, and pressure ulcers) are problematical for many reasons.  They are cause for immense concern.  As seen in various discussions, statistics, and wrongful death lawsuits, pressure sores that are not immediately and properly treated often cause a deterioration of health that, if allowed to persist, can lead to a variety of severe health conditions, some of which can be fatal in nature.

A recent article, that of March 27, 2016 titled “Wagner Heights Nursing Center Sued” discusses a lawsuit filed regarding the level of care received in a California care facility.  In the article, an “infected Stage IV pressure ulcer” is mentioned, as is the allegations concerning the level of care that the resident, identified as Robert Lampkins, received.

Additional details and possible updates can be seen in a variety of media sources, including that mentioned above.

Improper Handling Of Pressure Ulcers Alleged In Lawsuit

The existence of bedsores (also referred to as bed sores, pressure sores, and pressure ulcers) are notable for many reasons.  Often, such bedsores exist due to the care being provided being either insufficient and/or negligent.

However, what is especially problematical – and the source of many lawsuits against Illinois nursing homes and other similar long-term health care facilities – is if pressure sores are not properly treated after they develop.  In many cases, this leads to a further deterioration, and the many direct and indirect adverse health consequences associated with serious pressure sores can occur.

Various recent lawsuits regarding the development and worsening of pressure sores have been filed.  One such lawsuit is summarized in the Cook County Record article of January 29, 2016, titled “Suit claims nursing home’s negligence led to injuries.”  As seen in the article, various allegations are made in the lawsuit against the nursing home and its handling of a resident’s pressure sores.  The nursing home is based in Elmwood Park.  Additional details can be seen in the Cook County Record article.
