Bed Sores And Lawsuits Concerning Associated Injuries

Bed sores, as discussed extensively on this site, can lead to a broad range of serious injuries and associated adverse health conditions. One of the most common reasons for filing a nursing home neglect lawsuit concern the formation and accompanying harm caused by bed sores. In these suits, neglectful health care is often alleged. If the injuries and harm caused by bed sores lead to the death of a person, relevant parties often choose to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

Bed sores (also commonly referred to as pressure sores, bedsores, and pressure injuries) can be highly problematical – especially if they are allowed to worsen in severity. Pressure sores, and the harm they can cause, are further discussed on the “Pressure Sores” page. An excerpt:

Regardless of why the pressure sores have developed, it is absolutely imperative that they are treated immediately in a proper manner.  This is so that they don’t worsen in condition, which can lead to a range of various adverse health conditions – and possibly lead to death.  There have been many recent lawsuits – some in the Chicago area as well as elsewhere in Illinois – in which bedsores have been alleged to have caused serious injuries to nursing home residents, and in some cases – as seen in wrongful death lawsuits – the deaths of nursing home residents.

A recent Southern Illinois lawsuit in which the formation and worsening of bed sores is alleged is discussed in the September 19, 2018 Madison Record article titled “Willow Creek Rehabilitation & Nursing Center named in wrongful death suit.” An excerpt concerning the decedent, Lisa Stanton, and the alleged negligent care she received prior to her death:

According to the complaint, Stanton was admitted to Willow Creek Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in May 2016. As a result of the nursing facility’s negligence, Stanton suffered an urinary tract infection, severe bed sores and deep tissue injuries. She died later that month. The plaintiff alleges the nursing facility failed to implement preventive measures to avoid pressure ulcers and infections.

Additional details regarding bed sores and the severe harm they can cause can be seen in the sources mentioned above.
